Tennessee State 16, Jackson State 13
An onslaught of rain didn’t deter players or fans at the
2007 Southern Heritage Classic. And it didn’t dampen the
excitement of another hard-fought fight to the finish between
Tennessee State University (TSU) and Jackson State University
(JSU) that looked as if the game would be decided in overtime
for the third year in a row. But in the final few seconds of
the game, Tennessee State claimed victory with a 35-yard field goal,
emerging triumphant, 16-13.
For the majority of the game, it looked like the outcome would
be very different. Jackson State had an early 7-0 lead in the game
in the first quarter, carried that lead into halftime at 10-6,
and maintained momentum part-way through the third quarter at
13-6. Then TSU’s Terrence Wright scored his second touchdown
of the game to tie the score at 13-13 and set almost 51,000
fans on the edge of their seats.
With a mere 46 seconds remaining in the game, JSU handed TSU a
new set of downs by way of an illegal substitution.
Quarterback Antonio Heffner, FedEx Game MVP, completed a 30 yard pass to
Antonio Graham, setting up the winning field goal for Eric
Benson that had TSU fans on their feet, wild with glee.
