Tennessee State 20, Jackson State 14
Two arch-rivals needed some extra time to settle this Classic
battle - and it wasn't easy for either team.
In the end, TSU's Denard Cox's 3-yard touchdown scamper put
the game away in overtime, as a crowd of 48,300 looked on.
The score came on the heels of a mistake by JSU, which was
hit with a delay-of-game penalty for failing to return to
the field following a timeout. That left Tennessee State just
a few yards away from glory.
The game reflected the early-season jitters of college players,
with both teams getting hit by turnovers and penalties.
Still, Jackson State had its chances: Twice the Tigers from
Mississippi took the lead, but TSU scrambled back to regain
it.
The game seesawed, with Jackson State taking a 7-0 half-time
lead. TSU answered in the third with a 12-play, 79-yard drive.
In overtime, JSU couldn't move the ball, and TSU drove down
to the 5-yard line before the penalty set up the ending plunge
for a TD. |
