TSU broke its Classic drought behind quarterback Leon Murray's
For only the second time in nine Classics, TSU left the field
a winner, as Murray threw for 15 completions out of 26 tries.
He passed for one touchdown and ran another in himself.
Of course, he had a lot of help, chiefly running back Calvin
Davenport, who rushed for 120 yards.
That included touchdown gallops of 35 and 41 yards.
As 55,545 watched, JSU tried to keep it close with running
back Destry Wright and his 126 yards rushing, but his one
touchdown also came with two untimely fumbles.
Even for an early-season game, both teams showed a lack of
concentration as they committed seven turnovers, 22 penalties
for 190 yards and four failed conversion attempts.
Strangely enough, it was the winner that took most of those
setbacks. TSU's tally: four lost fumbles and 17 penalties
for 160 yards.
Still, on this night, they came out the right side of the
scoreboard for the first time since the inaugural Classic.
