Southern Heritage Classic booked for its 20th year
Two universities sign multi-year deals to take the
Classic into the future
MEMPHIS – The Southern Heritage Classic presented by
FedEx will be celebrating its 15th anniversary this year and
is already looking forward to its 20-year milestone. That’s
because Summitt Management Corporation has signed new multi-year
contracts with Tennessee State University and Jackson State
University. The TSU pact is for five years (2005-2009), taking
the event to the two-decade mark. JSU preferred a three-year
contract (2005-2007).
The Classic football game is the largest annual single-day
event in Memphis. “An event that can last for a decade
and a half has certainly established itself,” said Fred
Jones, president of Summitt Management, “and now with
these new contracts, we can show the community and our corporate
partners that we’ll be here for a long time to come
and will continue to be a source of pride for Memphis.

“These contract extensions display
the universities’ appreciation for the success of the
Classic and a belief in a future together. Memphis has always
been an important market for them, from recruiting athletes
to enrolling students. The Classic gives them a showcase,
and in turn, they give Memphis a real crowd-drawing event.”
The contracts provide that each school will be paid $250,000
a year to participate in the Classic. Each football team will
get $230,000, while each marching band will take home $20,000
for their show-in-itself appearances at half time.
The Southern Heritage Classic debuted in 1990, pitting TSU
from Nashville, Tenn., against JSU from Jackson, Miss. The
Classic is produced under the auspices of Summitt Management’s
subsidiary, SMC Entertainment.
The 15th annual Southern Heritage Classic presented by FedEx
is scheduled for September 16-18.
